TreasurySense and Me

My name is Joe Scattergood and I admit it; I love treasury and all things finance related.

Over 10 years ago, as a newly minted ACA, I was working in the central finance team at British Airports Association (BAA).  Having been obsessed with the banking shenanigans during the financial crisis a few years earlier, on one fateful day I heard a familiar language. 'LIBOR', 'bonds', 'derivatives', 'credit', 'liquidity', 'hedging', 'margins' were all spoken during a presentation given by a mysterious department calling themselves 'Treasury'. These were words I had not heard since the crisis in 2008, which I continue to read about to this day.  I was intrigued.

After researching the strange world of treasury and liking what I found, I jumped from financial accounting, audit and assurance, into the dazzling world of derivatives, liquidity, and corporate finance. This career pivot has been very successful for me, becoming Student of the Year in 2017 for the prestigious MCT qualification with the Association of Corporate Treasurers ('ACT'), and working at some excellent businesses including DS Smith plc, Britvic plc and EY.

I also found time to do a master's in mathematical modelling at UCL, scoring a distinction, and publishing my research in 2023 in an industry magazine: A Network Model Approach to International Aid.

So now, I am a chartered accountant and a treasury consultant, focusing on large transformation projects, including creating treasury functions, selecting and implementing technology, and advising on treasury operations including policies and procedures, controls, and efficient banking and cash pooling structures.

With this experience, plus some mathematical dabbling, and deep interest in business, economics and technology, my brain has been bugging me for a creative outlet for all the related stuff and nonsense that I put it through. This is why I created TreasurySense, with the overall aim of providing at least some entertaining and useful knowledge, applications and tools for finance professionals to attempt to read all the way to the end without nodding off. I too struggle with some other publications!

Being mission orientated, I am also an ultra-marathon athlete.  I completed four ultra marathons in 2024, most recently finishing 11th in a 100-mile race around Sherwood Forest. My brain, however, does not thank me for this particular endeavour!

CV highlights

A fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT), with many more qualifications that you, dear viewer, would get bored of reading.  But rest assured that I am qualified to write about many varied and interesting topics.

I love a challenge, particularly large and consequential projects. The list of successful projects includes transformational and creation projects, treasury management system implementations, cash forecasting, mergers and acquisitions, debt refinancing, risk and hedging solutions, and banking and liquidity management.

Businesses that have been lucky to have me include Grant Thornton, BAA, DS Smith, Britvic, Kier, and EY.

I have written, published and featured in articles that can be found on this website. I enjoy teaching and developing others, usually using some ghastly-drawn diagrams.
